Although there's currently a reboot film in development, Neumeier has now indicated there have also been talks for a TV series featuring the original cast.
Asked by HN Entertainment about the possibility of a soft-reboot with the original cast, Neumeier responded, "Well, I think they can. I don’t want to jinx anything, but we are talking about trying to do a television show that is based on that idea."
Neumeier also has high hopes for the return of Casper Van Dien as Juan "Johnny" Rico. "I’ve written all sorts of things with Casper now as Johnny Rico and it’s a gas to write him because he gives you that character," he said, "he gives you more than you think, as soon as he shows up, the tone comes with him a little bit. I think it’s because he’s ridiculously handsome, he’s got this boyish can-do attitude, which is what Johnny Rico is, and a lot of the brand comes with him."
The screenwriter also expressed his lack of faith in the upcoming reboot, which is said to involve the writers of Dwayne Johnson's Baywatch movie and the producers of the 2012 Total Recall remake. "Well, I have mixed feelings about it [the reboot] because I think that what we did with the first Starship is almost not repeatable in a way," he said, adding that remakes don't always recapture the magic.
"Sometimes you can reboot something, but sometimes it just doesn’t feel right,” Neumeier said. Ideas for the reboot that are currently floating around include a PG-13 movie sticking close to the original's structure, which was inspired by WWII propaganda films, and a sci-fi version of An Officer and a Gentleman. Neumeier doesn't think either option will be very interesting to contemporary audiences.
Based on a book by Robert Heinlein, Starship Troopers was directed by Paul Verhoeven and starred Casper Van Dien, Denise Richards, Jake Busey and Dina Meyer. It was followed by two sequels: Hero of the Federation and Marauder, an animated feature called Traitor of Mars and an often forgotten cartoon spinoff -- the computer-animated Roughnecks: The Starship Trooper Chronicles.
